The Bread Of Life

Today I read a story in a magazine entitled “The Bread of Life.” In the 1800s in London, a little boy wanted to hear the great American evangelist D. L. Moody, who had come to town to preach. This little homeless boy made his way across the entire city of London, risking his very life, with no food or proper shoes. After a long trip, he finally came to the great church where Moody was scheduled to speak. As he made his way up to the door, an old usher scowled at him and asked, “What are you doing, young man?” The boy said, “I am going to go hear the great evangelist D. L. Moody.”

“Not looking like that! You are filthy. Go away!”

The little boy was crushed. He was sitting on the steps, crying, when a black carriage pulled up in front of the church. Out of it stepped a large man. He saw the sad little boy on the steps and asked, “Young man, what is wrong?” The boy answered, “I came here to hear the great preacher D. L. Moody, but they won’t let me in the church.”

“Is that so?” the big man said. “You just put your hand in my hand, and I will see what I can do to help you.” The little boy put his dirty little hand into the man’s big clean hand. The man led him right down the middle aisle, past the usher who wouldn’t let him in, to the front row. The big man sat him in a front-row seat. Then the man stepped up to the pulpit. That man was, of course, D. L. Moody. That young boy couldn’t get in on his own, but when he held Moody’s hand, he walked through the front door. So it is with us—because of Jesus. We are filthy in sin, but he takes our dirty hands in his clean one and leads us to the front-row seats in the palace.

Sharing

Jesus, the master evangelist, used something that many Christians seriously lack today, which is tact. Tact has been defined as diplomacy, sensitivity. One definition of it is skill and grace in dealing with others.Sir Isaac Newton defined tact as “the art of making a point without making an enemy.”

There is a built-in offense to the essential message of the gospel, but we don’t have to make it worse by being insensitive to people. And far too often this happens. I have watched it. You probably have too. A Christian will walk up to an unbeliever and start the conversation with something like this: “Hey, heathen. Did you know you are going to hell?” That is not the way to build a bridge.

When Jesus approached the woman at the well in Samaria, He asked her a question. He drew her out. He engaged her. Evangelism is a dialogue, not a monologue. And the best way to engage a person in a conversation is to listen. In starting a conversation, the objective is to build a bridge. That is what we want to do. Ask people about themselves. Everyone’s favorite subject is themselves. And as they talk, engage them. Ask them questions. You don’t have to cut people off. You don’t have to contradict them. You don’t have to insult them. Just listen.

Sure, there is a place for point and counterpoint. Sure, we need to defend our beliefs. But no one has ever been argued into the kingdom of God. And I have seen Christians win the argument and lose the soul. But I would rather win the soul and listen and engage and give and take. As you do this, you will know from the conversation how to respond with the gospel message. Listen patiently. And then respond appropriately. There is too much at stake!

Can You Trust God's Timing

Late last night – a friend called from the hospital he has a family member in a very difficult situation – he said “I am afraid will you pray?” Of course! Karlene and I began praying immediately. After prayer and several texts I began to think about the story of Jesus ‘s friend Lazarus.  Friends, sometimes God will not come through as quickly as we want Him to. Mary and Martha, two friends of Jesus, faced this dilemma. Their brother Lazarus was sick. It was a serious illness. So they sent word to Jesus.

I think they probably believed that Jesus would make a beeline to Bethany to get Lazarus off his sickbed. But Jesus intentionally delayed His arrival. Mary and Martha were thinking of what was temporarily good. But Jesus was thinking of what was eternally good. This delay was for their sake. It was for them to learn a lesson.
Meanwhile, Mary and Martha had probably been saying, “Jesus will be here. He will drop whatever He is doing and be here.”But He didn’t show up on the day they wanted Him to. And He didn’t come the next day or the day after that. Lazarus passed from sickness to death. In their minds, all hope was gone. By the time Jesus arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days.

Here was the problem: Mary and Martha wanted a healing. But Jesus wanted a resurrection. He brought Lazarus back to life and, as a result, many believed in Jesus. Mary and Martha’s faith was strengthened, as well as that of the disciples and the entire church.

Like Mary and Martha, we will say, “God, if you loved me, you would do this. You would take care of that.” But God says, “Because I love you, I am not going to give you these things right now – trust my timing.” God wants to do something greater in your life. Will you let Him? Can you trust His timing?

Jesus Is Standing There For You

Did you know that your insecurities and failures come as no surprise to Jesus? He knows everything about you. He knows you better than you know yourself. So it came as no shock to the Lord when Peter failed. But Jesus loved Peter, just as He loves you. Jesus even gave Peter a second chance. The disciples were sitting in the Upper Room when Jesus turned to Peter and said something that must have shocked him to the core: “ ‘Peter, Peter, Indeed, Satan has asked for you…’ ” (Luke22:31).
Can you imagine if He said that to you? There you are. Your sold out to following Him – You can’t think of anyone you love more. And suddenly, Jesus turns to you and says, “Satan has been asking for you.”

But I love the next verse. Jesus said to Peter, “ ‘But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail’ ” (Luke 22:32). Can you believe that – Jesus was praying for Peter, just as He is praying for you. If you knew that Jesus was in this room right now, praying for you specifically by name, would that give you courage? Would that give you strength?
Let me say this. Right now Jesus is praying for you. We know that because the Bible says, “Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25). Wow… Just as surely as Jesus was standing in the gap for Peter, He is standing there for you. He knows you, and He is praying for you. You are not alone.

Signs Of The Times

Everyday we see the amazing accuracy of the Bible through the “Signs of the Times.” Wars and rumors of wars, (North Korea testing nuclear missiles) earthquakes in strange places, and changes in the weather patterns. When the Bible says the Antichrist is coming, you better believe it’s going to happen. With computer technology where it is today, the possibility for a man to come and use technology to manipulate and rule the world is present like it has never been before. Everything is ready for the Antichrist to come. It could happen at any time.

Despite the inevitability of the Antichrist, I’m not going to stand around holding my breath, waiting for him to come.
Many people try to figure out who he is. And every few years, a new theory arises where someone has allegedly cracked the code. They know who the Antichrist is.

But I’m not looking for him, because the Bible doesn’t tell me to. The Bible says, “Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near” (Luke 21:28). I’m not looking for the Antichrist.

No friends – I am looking for Jesus Christ. And He is coming soon and very soon.

Ordinary To Extraordinary

My Classic Car With Dennis Gage is a long running American TV car show on Speed Channel. I love this show. Tonight they had a 1964 Aston Martin that sold for $4.6 million. Why so much? This Aston Martin had been driven by the character James Bond in the films Goldfinger and Thunderball. The car has some pretty cool features: guns that poke through the tail lights, a license plate that rotates, and best of all, a passenger seat capable of ejecting its occupant. None of these features actually work, however. But this is a car from the James Bond movies, and more specifically, it was driven by Sean Connery as James Bond. Although it is a cool car, the value is not in the car itself. The value is in who drove the car.

As believers, our value in us is God, who takes residence in us. His Spirit drives our lives. We are reminded in 2 Corinthians 4:7, “We now have this light shining in our hearts, but we ourselves are like fragile clay jars containing this great treasure. This makes it clear that our great power is from God, not from ourselves.”

The disciples were common people that God used. And their faults and mistakes, as well as their triumphs and victories, are faithfully recorded in Scripture for us to learn from. Jesus took them from ordinary to extraordinary and he wants to do the same for you. Will you let Him drive?

I Was Made For Another World

Have you ever sat and thought about Heaven?

Friends our most detailed description of Heaven is found in Revelation chapters 21 and 22. To gain an appreciation for just how marvelous Heaven will be we need to understand the nature and dimension of the city that will be its capital. The New Jerusalem is the crown jewel of the new creation of God. The New Jerusalem is not all of Heaven, but it is the capital city of Heaven. Remember, God has been building that city for the last 2,000 years!

The size of the New Jerusalem is mind boggling. It is the answer to anyone who has ever asked, “How is Heaven going to be big enough to hold all of the saved down through all of the ages?” The city’s exact dimensions are measured by an angel (Revelation 21:15-17) and reported to be cube-shaped with each side measuring twelve thousand stadia (nearly fifteen hundred miles). We don’t have to worry that Heaven will be crowded for the base of the city alone adds up to more than 200 million square miles. A city this size if placed in the United States would reach from Canada to Mexico and from the Appalachian Mountains to the California border. Perhaps even more amazing if we allowed 12 feet per story the city would be more 600,000 stories high.

There is within every human heart a desire for home, this desire for home can only partially be fulfilled in the present. Someday we who have by faith believed in Jesus Christ as our Savior, are going home. As C.S. Lewis said, “If nothing in this world satisfies me, perhaps it is because I was made for another world.”

The Greatest Thing

But the greatest thing in Heaven is not the City with its gates of pearl, massive walls or foundations of precious stones. Streets of gold pale in comparison to the Heaven that is in Heaven! Beyond the glory of the city itself, we have Jesus who is the Light of the World! In verse twenty-three John tells us, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.”

The prophet Isaiah had predicted in Isaiah 60:19 “The sun shall no longer be your light by day, Nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you; But the LORD will be to you an everlasting light, And your God your glory.

In the New Jerusalem there will be no electric lights, no power generators, no lamps of any kind because they are unnecessary. The presence of light will radiate throughout the city and it will emanate from the Lamb who sits upon the throne.
The brilliance of the glory of Jesus the Son of God will fill the city. As well as each of our eternal souls! I hope and pray you and all of yours are preparing for LIFE IN THE NEW JERUSALEM !

Our Job

Heaven is characterized as much by the things that will not be there as by the things that will.

Verse four says, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” The Bible does not say there will be no tears in Heaven. He says that there will come a time that he will wipe away all our tears. There will be no more death. There are no funeral processions or cemeteries in Heaven. No cancer, aids, drug addiction, alcohol addiction, no sickness- no more pain. I know there are some that live with pain every day of your life. Some of you are physically hurting but you go to church anyway and you serve Him daily. For others of you, the pain is not physical it is emotional pain that you have to deal with, the pain of rejection, the pain of loss, the pain of failure, the pain of disappointment …Pain is a part of life here on earth, but God says there will be no more pain.

Heaven is also characterized by the absence of sin. In verse eight John says, “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death… (27) But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” Friends It’s our job to make sure all our loved ones are on the way to Heaven. Do it lovingly ….

Thinking Of The Saints

Readers Digest tells the story of a little girl who was asked in her Sunday school class what a saint was. Thinking of the saints in stained glass windows, she replied, “Oh, those are the people the light shines through.” She was right. That is exactly what a saint is: someone whom the light shines through. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). According to Scripture, a saint is a true believer. When we think of these great men of God, all true believers, it is hard for us to think of them as human beings. But when we read their stories in Scripture, they are very candid and honest. We see their shortcomings and missteps and even their sins. I think the reason for this is so we can see that God can do extraordinary things through ordinary people.

These men that God used were quite ordinary. They weren’t superheroes. They were very human. They were not called by God because they were great. Rather, their greatness came as a result of the call of God. God does not call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

As 2 Corinthians 4:7 says, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.” God goes out of His way to find ordinary people to work through—people like you and me.

The New Jerusalem

In my last post I described the dimensions of the New Jerusalem – in the next several post a brief description of the heavenly city.

As you enter into the city you are going to stand in amazement. First, John tells us about “The Pearly Gates” (vv. 12-13, 21)
Heaven is usually pictured with a single pair of pearly gates. But the Bible says in verse twelve, “Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: (13) three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west… (21)….. The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl…”

Some find great significance in the fact that the gates to the Heavenly city are pearls and pearls are only created through suffering and travail. Each time one enters the Heavenly city it should be remembered that entrance is only possible because of the suffering and pain of our Savior.

The Power Of Encouragement

What a wonderful world it would be if we all learned to unlock the power of encouragement. Encouragement is the act of inspiring others with renewed courage, renewed spirit, or renewed hope.

In the New Testament, the words most often translated as “encouragement” mean “alongside of” and “to call.” When people come alongside us during difficult times to give us renewed courage, a renewed spirit, renewed hope — that’s encouragement.
History has been changed by the power of encouragement. Think of Aaron and Hur lifting Moses’ hands toward heaven in Exodus 17 as Joshua fought in the valley below. Consider the power of Isaiah’s words to King Ahaz when Judah was faced with invasion by two enemies: “Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands” (Isaiah 7:4).

When Moses was preparing the Israelites to finally enter the Promised Land, he told them: “Look, the LORD your God has set the land before you; go up and possess it, as the LORD God of your fathers has spoken to you; do not fear or be discouraged…. Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it” (Deuteronomy 1:21,38).

Moses was saying, “Don’t be discouraged. And don’t be a discourager. Encourage Joshua!”
You and I can also lift and hold up the spirits of others in our fight against our enemy (satan)
Nobody accomplishes anything in isolation. The Bible says, “None of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself” (Romans 14:7). Everyone who does anything noteworthy is blessed with at least one cheerleader — one person gifted with hope, faith, and a can-do attitude. I have been blessed with my wife Karlene who for 25 years has encouraged me to follow Gods plan for our life! Many times the burdens have weighed heavy on her. Yet she always gives me a reassuring smile.
You can be that person in another’s life. Today choose to ENCOURAGE !

What Fills That Void

Some years ago, I came across the obituary of a woman named Doris Duke, a tobacco heiress and philanthropist. She was a woman of immeasurable wealth, worth some $1 billion at the time of her death at age 80.

She once told a friend that she never knew when a man really loved her, because, after all, she was worth a billion dollars. She said, “I would go out with a man a couple of times, and the next thing I knew, he would be saying, ‘I love you.’ I could never really know if he really meant it. How could I be sure?”

While the right relationship built on the right foundation can be wonderful, there is a far greater love available to us. The Bible tells us about it in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (NKJV). This same God wants to come into your life and show you real love.
Each of us was born with a hole in our heart that cannot be filled with anyone or anything. We can try to fill it with relationships. We can try to fill it with possessions or career or success or a myriad of other things. But nothing will fill that void because we were created to know God. It’s as simple as asking Him in.

Whose Fault Is It?

When we look at the problems in America today, we are quick to point the finger at someone else. It is the fault of Hollywood. It is the fault of the liberal media. It is the fault of Congress, its our President. But when God sees the moral breakdown of a nation, He points to His people: “If my people who are called by my name….”

So what should we, as His people, be doing?

First, we need to humble ourselves. One of the hardest things to do is to say that we have sinned. Maybe you haven’t sinned as much as some people you know, but God doesn’t grade on the curve. That’s why we need to humble ourselves before God and admit that we have sinned.

Second, we need to pray and seek God’s face. To fail to pray can be as much of a sin as breaking one of God’s commands, because there are sins of omission as well as sins of commission. A sin of commission is breaking a commandment, while the sin of omission is not doing what you are supposed to do.

Third, we need to repent. “If my people will…turn from their wicked ways….” The word “repent” essentially means to make a U-turn, or a change of direction. If we are going to follow Jesus, then “We”need to examine our lives for anything that is inconsistent with God’s Word and needs to change.

God has told us what we need to do as a nation to see His blessing come upon us. We need to stop pointing our fingers at everyone else and make sure that we are living the Christian life that God intended for us to live. But it starts with you. It starts with me.

Great Victories And Great Challenges

Often after great victories, the greatest challenges and temptations of the Christian life will come. I have found that after great blessings in my life, after God works in a powerful way, the devil will be there to challenge it. In fact every Monday morning!

Think about it. After God had powerfully worked through Elijah on Mount Carmel, the prophet became so discouraged that he wanted to die. After Jesus was transfigured, He came down from the mountain to find a demon-possessed person waiting for them.

After Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River and the Holy Spirit came upon Him in the form of a dove and God said, “This is my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with him” (Matthew 3:17). Then He was led into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After the dove came the devil.

The devil will always be there to challenge whatever God has done. It may come after church, after God has blessed you and spoken to you. You leave the parking lot and get hit with a heavy-duty temptation or worry, fear, doubt. Maybe your kids start fighting in the back seat, “Don’t Make Me Come Back There! – I’m pulling the van over RIGHT NOW!”

You wonder how that could happen. But that is just the devil’s way. He wants to make your life miserable. Most importantly, he wants to steal anything that God has done in your life.
The devil is watching us and he’s looking for vulnerabilities. That is why we need to pray for any person whom we know that God is using. And that is why we need to brace ourselves. The more you step out to be used by the Lord, the more you can expect opposition from the devil. However, be encouraged That’s when you lean on Jesus lift your voice and PRAISE THE LORD!

God Is Never Too Busy For Us

Watching “Duck Dynasty with my kids and CEO Willie says, “If you want to get your heart right go to the woods.”

I think David may have been sitting out in a pasture one night, taking in all the glory of God’s creation, when he wrote, “O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them, mere mortals that you should think about them?” (Psalm 144:3).

That is a great question. I have often thought the same thing. Why would God care about us? I don’t know, but I know that He does and I am thankful. If it concerns us, it concerns Him. If it is a burden to us, then, in effect, it is a burden to Him that He wants to deal with and resolve. We see this illustrated in the life of Jesus. In Mark 5 he has the time to heal the demon possessed man of the Gaderenes, Tabitha the daughter of Jairus, and the women with an issue with her blood.

This is a reminder that God is never too busy for us. We may think God has so much going on in the universe, and He does. But we are His children, and He always has time to hear our prayers. Call out to Him – the master of the universe is listening.

Back To The Future

Remember the movie “Back To The Future,” where Michael J Fox took a Delorian sports car “time machine”and went back in time! How cool would that be, to witness all the great moments in history.

If I could have been present at certain moments in history, and there are too many to list here, but one event I would like to have seen was the veil of the temple being torn in two. In the inner court of the temple in Jerusalem, in the Holy of Holies, was the Ark of the Covenant. That was where the high priest would go once a year to offer prayers (atonement )for the sins of the people. A veil, a very thick, woven curtain, separated the Holy of Holies where Gods spirit would come and visit from the rest of the temple. When Jesus died on the cross as a sacrifice for our sins, that heavy curtain was torn from top to bottom. It was not ripped from bottom to top, as though a man were ripping it. Instead, it was ripped from top to bottom, because God was ripping it. God was saying, “You no longer are on the outside. You can come in. My Son has made a way for you.”

The apostle Paul explained how we can now draw near to God:
Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, and having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. (Hebrews 10:19–22)

The veil was torn. Jesus is now our Intercessor. We don’t have to go through a person to reach God anymore. We don’t have to go through rituals anymore. Instead, Jesus made a new and living way for us to reach God.

Jesus paid it all. Making way not just for a visitation from God but a habitation of God in the hearts of all who believe. And that is so important to remember.

He Will Not Leave You!

The History Channel has been airing “The Bible” while at times its not as Biblically accurate as I wish it could be, I am thankful they are airing it to a new generation of Americans. It got me thinking about one of the best-known and most-loved stories of the Bible. Daniel in the lion’s den, a story of angelic intervention in the life of one of God’s most faithful servants.

The government officials were very jealous of Daniel because Gods favor was on him and he was promoted over them so they set a trap for him.

They knew that Daniel went into his room three times a day to pray, so they persuaded King Darius to enact a law banning the worship of anyone but the king. The king was legally required to punish Daniel for continuing to pray to his God, so he reluctantly threw Daniel into the lion’s den.

The next morning, the king came to the den of the lions, he found the secret to Daniel’s deliverance. The king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?” Then Daniel said to the king, “O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me. . . .” (Daniel 6:20–22)

God saw the dilemma of His servant and dispatched an angel to deliver him. We may not face a den of lions in the natural, but we do face Satan the roaring lion who is seeking every day to devour you and me. Listen, every faithful Christian, can rest in the fact that angels sent by our living, loving God are daily watching out for us. Remember God is no respecter of persons and what he has done for Daniel he will do for you! He will not leave you or forsake you!

Lack Of Knowledge

The Lord spoke to the prophet Hosea about the condition of the church: Hosea 4:6

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. . . . ” sadly I see the same traits in many people in churches every week. After 25 years of itinerant ministry every week in a different church I have learned to discern the biblical IQ of the group I’m addressing in the first few minutes of my message. I observe the way they track, the way they listen, and how they praise. What interests them, and what doesn’t interest them. I note how they will come alive when an illustration is rolled out. But as soon as I get back to the biblical text, many go into a daze, as if to say, Wake me when the next illustration or joke is coming.

This is because many have never learned to love the Bible. They have never developed a hunger for it. This is what I want for every congregation—I want them to love the Word of God. We love worship, We love the coffee bars, and We love fellowship. Let me say, I love them too. But I believe the main event is the teaching and the preaching of the Word of God. That is what I want believers to care for.

Yet tragically, so many people in the church today are biblically illiterate. They don’t have a biblical worldview. I can’t tell you how many times I have gone to a church as a guest speaker and said, “Turn in your Bibles to . . . ” and no one has a Bible. I always think maybe its on there Smart Phone. But when I refer to certain biblical passages or a biblical story, they will look at me with blank expressions. This is not a good sign. I believe the cry of Hosea 4:6 rings true for many in the church today: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” In other words we make bad decisions in our daily lives because we don’t have the wisdom and knowledge of Gods word hidden in our heart. It’s as simple as daily reading the Bible.
